Adding Cyclo-REM to Your Whey Protein Can Increase Lean Muscle Mass

by: Robbie Durand

Cyclo-REM is Infinite’s Labs flagship sleep formula for improved sleep, but according to a new study shared at the 2016 ACSM Annual Meeting in Boston, taking Cyclo-REM post-exercise with your whey protein make accelerate lean muscle mass gains. The study demonstrated that supplementing with a post-exercise whey protein regimen with GABA produces an increase in resting serum growth hormone, improving the lean muscle mass gains. This new research highlights that GABA can be used for other purposes besides just sleep.

GABA is a neurotransmitter that acts to reduce communication between nerve cells in the brain, thus producing a calming effect. Research suggests that GABA supports sleep cycles and decreases disruptions during sleep. GABA has also been shown to enhance GH levels as well, which contributes to its muscle restoration effects.

GABA Increases Exercise GH Levels
A previous study reported that GABA administered before exercise can increase GH levels. Scientists had participants engage in a workout session that targeted all the main muscle groups. In order to tell which effects were from the GABA and which were from training alone, the scientists had the participants engage in the workout once without supplementing the GABA, and administered GABA without a workout to serve as a control. The researchers consisted of a full body workout consisting of chest presses, lat pull downs, flies, seated rows, shoulder presses, biceps curls, triceps extensions, leg press, leg curls, leg extensions, and calf raises. The subjects trained using 70 percent of the weight at which they could just manage one rep, doing 1 set of each exercise and resting for 1 minute between sets. At the end of the study, the researchers found that GABA increased the total amount of growth hormone the subjects made as a result of training by 480 percent. The data indicate that ingested GABA elevates resting and postexercise GH concentrations. The extent to which GH secretion contributes to skeletal muscle hypertrophy is unknown, although augmenting the postexercise GH response may improve resistance training-induced muscular adaptation.

GABA with Whey Protein Increases Lean Muscle Mass
A new study recently just presented at the ACSM annual meeting that GABA combined with whey protein boosted lean muscle mass. The study looked at 26 males, aged 26 to 48, who practiced progressive resistance weight training. The group was divided in two—all ingested 10 grams of whey protein daily, half supplemented it with 100 milligrams of GABA. The group trained twice weekly, following a systematized circuit of weight-resistance exercises. Resting serum growth hormone was recorded in blood plasma at baseline, four, eight, and 12 weeks; while change in muscle mass was measured using dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) at baseline and twelve weeks.

GABA and Whey Protein
The Researchers found that whey protein combined with GABA resulted in greater increases in lean muscle mass.

At the end of 12 weeks, lean mass was dramatically increased in the group taking both whey protein and GABA together compared to the group just taking whey protein. The researchers also found that whey protein and GABA resulted in a greater sustained GH response which may have contributed to the greater lean muscle mass gains.
