At the age of 20, weighing only 150 pounds, I began training to become a professional bodybuilder. My parents knowing nothing about the sport or understanding my desire considered bodybuilding a waste of time and worried about my future. However my parents taught me the importance of work ethic and how to work toward something.
In 1980 I joined a famous hard core bodybuilding gym- Mr. America’s here on Long Island N.Y.This is also where the movie “Pumping Iron II” was filmed featuring Bev Francis. This gym has a history and many interesting stories from famous bodybuilder‘s of the 80’s. The walls were painted a grim Black and red. The facility resembled a medieval torture chamber more than a fitness center. Many Pro’s passed through those doors in search of the ultimate hardcore atmosphere, Nothing short of all-out intensity was permitted within those walls.
“Intensity or Insanity”
is the term coined for the brutal, grueling training system that sent many an aspiring bodybuilder into early retirement via hospitalization and placed a great many more on the path to bodybuilding excellence. After closing its doors, I joined Bev Francis Gold’s Gym, Currently known as Power House The East Coast Mecca. Bev is a World Champion power lifter and bodybuilder and her husband Steve Weinberger an NPC/IFBB official, owners of the gym, they are always willing to share their expertise knowledge with their members. They have given me an abundance of advice and guidance with my training and dieting.
1988 I won my first bodybuilding show, The NPC New Jersey Suburban. Now I had a taste of victory, only making me hungry for more. In the year of 1990, I received my call for the New York City’s Finest Police Department.(NYPD) I completely stop bodybuilding for one year so I could put all my efforts into the Police Academy. When things settled into place and I was familiar with my new career I went back to training full force with complete determination to turn PRO. I surrounded myself with exceptional people. I trained with many professional bodybuilder’s and absorb as much information possible.
1994 I had another life changing event, I was called for the County Police Department, suburbs of New York, I knew this meant another police academy and I would have to stop bodybuilding again to give it my full attention, however I felt it was the best for my family. As soon as I was settled, I got right back into the bodybuilding madness chasing my dream of obtaining Professional bodybuilder Status. Managing a full time career, I had a supportive wife and family enabling me to compete and taking First Place titles.
The Year 2000 I felt ready for the Nationals andentered my first show atthis level, I came in at second place for my weight class. My career in Law enforcement was also going well. I have received six certificates for meritorious Police duties. I was awarded the Prestigious Medal of Commendation for going beyond the call of duty and Voted Police Officer of the Year. I also had the honor of joining the elite S.W.A.T. team unit for the Police Department.
2001 was my year for bodybuilding; I competed and won first place and the overall Championship at the NPC National level, I received my Pro status.Another memorable experience of that year was being invited by the Weider organization as a special guest to the 2001 Mr. Olympia. Mr. Joe Weider presented me with an IFBB Gold Medal Award for my efforts at Ground Zero.
The next goal for me was to enter my first Professional bodybuilding show with a hope of placing in the top ten. I strongly believe with Dedication, Discipline and determination, it will happen! I teach my methods and ideals to many who wish to achieve victory.
People have always told me “you can’t have it all” My answer back, I have Pro bodybuilding status, 4 children a wonderful wife and a successful career in Law enforcement….. Yes you can have it all.
